The history of Taiwan Fund for Children and Families
With a scene of devastation everywhere in a little town in northern China in 1937, a foreign priest was walking back and forth on the street and thinking about how to contribute to the victims of the war. There was a dead female body lying along the street. Suddenly, he heard a baby crying and rushed to search for the location. He found a severely wounded baby carried on his dead mother’s back. Without hesitation, he sent the baby to the hospital right away and took him home for further care. Since then, saving the patients and keeping the orphans away from hunger and homelessness had become his first target, and his house served as an orphanage. That’s how the Christian Children Fund (CCF) started.
Many American Christians were deeply affected by his devotion. Therefore, they established China’s Children Fund (abbreviated as CCF) in Richmond, Virginia, USA to help thousands of homeless Chinese orphans during the Sino-Japanese War in 1938. Meanwhile, they set up the first orphanage in Canton, China and 42 nursery schools were running around China in succession.
In August 1950, CCF set up its first family-style orphanage, Kwang-Yin Orphanage in Taiwan, for sheltering those needy children whose families were stricken by accidents. This opened the first page of CCF’s history in Taiwan. We later changed our name to Taiwan Fund for Children and Families (TFCF).
About Taiwan Fund for Children and Families
Taiwan Fund for Children and Families (TFCF) is an international non-governmental organization that supports vulnerable children and their families and has its headquarters in Taichung, Taiwan. From the financial support through foreign donors in the very early beginning, we are now a self-independent organization whose mission and vision still remain on the consideration of needy children’s benefits. We are helping children in dire need in Taiwan and worldwide all through the contribution and donations from the public.
TFCF national branches have been established in counties and cities of Taiwan to carry on our services for more children and families since 1964. We also have introduced Family Helper Projects into Taiwan and launched the children's sponsorship program to deliver donations directly to needy families. By providing financial assistance, we work to keep families together and hope vulnerable children grow up in origin families.
TFCF advocates many welfare services and collaborative programs with the government. Now there were more than 100,000 children, youth, and families who benefited from the services.
